DescriptionCysts. B. coli is the largest ciliated protozoon found in humans and can cause a severe colitis with ulcerations.

The only infusoria, pathogenic to humans, is the ciliary infusoria of Balantidium cali. This is the largest protozoan, parasitizing on man. The causative agent identified Malm walls (1857); his etiological role was proved by N.S. Solovyov (1910). Balantidiasis (infusor dysentery) is a protozoal infection of the colon with the development of diarrhea and ulceration of the intestinal wall. Trophozoite V. coli has an elongated, ovoid, body (30-150 × 30-100 μm); Moves with the help of cilia, often revolving around its axis. The causative agent balantidiasis eats various food particles, including fungi, bacteria and blood elements, which are used to swallow a cytoste (cellular mouth), surrounded by long cilia (4-6). The nuclear apparatus is represented by a large nucleus (macronucleus) and a nucleolus (micronucleus)
