DescriptionBetween the esophagus and stomach is a special muscular valve that lets the food into the stomach, but not back. A condition where, for one reason or another, the contents of the stomach (gastric juice) enters the esophagus are called gastroesophageal reflux. If the mucous wall of the stomach is well protected from the action of hydrochloric acid, the wall of the esophagus is damaged and inflamed, and a person feels heartburn.

It should be noted that the reverse flow of stomach contents into the esophagus is observed from time to time in all people, including healthy ones. In the case when this phenomenon is often repeated, inflammation of the lower part of the esophagus develops. In this case, it is a question of gastroesophageal reflux disease

According to medical observations, approximately 10% of patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease develop Barrett"s syndrome — a disease in which the walls of the esophagus change their anatomical structure and become more like intestinal walls. This is due to the frequent irritation of the mucous membranes of the esophagus with gastric juice.

Some studies show that frequent gastroesophageal reflux may increase the likelihood of esophageal cancer. And although the data of these studies are of an indirect nature, nevertheless, doctors are urged to be examined as early as possible, so that in case of the presence of a tumor, immediately begin appropriate therapy.

Most often, Barrett's esophagus in patients with GERD is caused by the deterioration of living conditions, smoking and drinking alcohol in any quantities, taking certain medications on the background of reflux esophagitis. Risk factors include male gender, a reflux history of more than 5 years, an age older than 50 years, repeated relapses of reflux esophagitis during the year. When pancreatic enzymes and bile enter the esophagus, the disease is more severe, and metaplasia progresses faster. At the initial stages of Barrett's syndrome, the migration of a cylindrical gastric epithelium into the esophagus is a protective reaction, since such a mucosa is less susceptible to the aggressive influence of an acidic environment.
InstructionsChanges in esophageal cells usually caused by acid reflux. Use 2127.5 for 6 min
