Geomagnetic activity | Detail |
Two interactive graphs are presented of geomagnetic activity on our planet in units of A-index. A (Planetary A Index) — planetary index, or the average level of geomagnetic activity. This indicator represents the response of Earth to solar activity and is situated as the arithmetical average of the eight 3-hour KP-indexes over the past day. A-index is derived from the K index but converted to a linear scale in nanotesla. The first chart shows the values of this index for every three hours.
The state of the ionosphere | The K-index | A-index |
Calm | 0-1 | 0-7 |
Unstable | 2 | 8-15 |
Disturbed | 3 | 16-29 |
A weak storm | 4 | 30-49 |
Big storm | 5 | 50-99 |
The mighty storm(the storm) | 6-9 | more than 99 |
K (Planetary K Index) is the average planetary index, characterizati fluctuations of the horizontal component of Earth's magnetic field, measured every three hours by magnetometers at several points of the globe.
The health of many people depends on the state of the geomagnetic environment, which can be estimated with these data. Also, they are useful in evaluating many types of radio communications.
