The mobility of ions in gases
In the reference table are presented the experimental data of the mobility of ions of some gases is positive (μ+) and negative (μ-) measured in [cm2/V*s]. The gas pressure corresponds to the normal, and the temperature of 18-20° C. Also, an approximate value of molecular weight gases (M).
Gas | M | μ+ | μ- |
Nitrogen | 28 | 1.27 | 1.84 |
Ammonia | 17 | 0.74 | 0.80 |
Benzene | 78 | 0.18 | 0.21 |
Hydrogen | 2 | 6.70 | 7.95 |
The air | 29 | 1.38 | 1.87 |
Helium | 4 | 5.09 | 6.31 |
Nitrous oxide | 44 | 0.82 | 0.90 |
Oxygen | 32 | 1.32 | 1.83 |
Carbon monoxide | 28 | 1.10 | 1.40 |
Water vapor | - | 0.47 | 0.43 |
Carbon dioxide | 44 | 0.84 | 1.05 |
The motion of ions in gases under a constant and relatively small electric fields, the average value of the speed \(v\) in the direction of the lines of force of this field is proportional to the tension \(E\): \[v = \mu E \] the Coefficient of proportionality is the mobility of ions \(\mu\).
