Description | Peptostreptococcus (lat. Peptostreptococcus) is a genus of gram-positive anaerobic spore-forming bacteria of spherical or oval form. During the life of peptostreptococci, hydrogen is released, which in the intestine is converted to hydrogen peroxide, which helps maintain acidity at a pH of 5.5 and below. Peptostreptococci are involved in the proteolysis of milk proteins, fermentation of carbohydrates. They do not have hemolytic properties.Peptostreptococcus anaerobius (peptostreptococcus anaerobius) is isolated from abscesses of the brain, jaw, pelvic organs, abdominal cavity, pleural cavity, blood, articular fluid, odontogenic sepsis, urinary tract infection of postimplant endocarditis (Zubkov MN). Under certain conditions, peptostreptococci can cause appendicitis. They are usually the causative agents of mixed infections, manifested in associations with other microorganisms |
