DescriptionStreptococcus mutans (Streptococcus mutans) is known for its ability to cause the appearance of carious cavities in the teeth. These bacteria live in the dental plaque formed by them and synthesize the acid destroying the tooth enamel.

Usually this is all limited, but in some cases, for example, after performing a surgical procedure in the mouth or after a particularly diligent tooth floss, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream. The immune system takes only a few seconds to destroy them, but sometimes microorganisms manage to move to the heart and colonize its tissues. This can lead to the development of deadly endocarditis — inflammation of the endocardium (the lining that lines the inner surface of the heart), the main causative agent of which is the streptococcus mutant
