DescriptionGemobartonellosis of cats is also known as Infectious anemia of cats and hemotropic mycoplasmosis. This disease is carried by mites and sometimes fleas. Gemobartonellosis affects the red blood cells responsible for oxygen transfer.

Typically, the causative agent of hemobartonellosis in cats are mycoplasmas of the form Mycoplasma haemofelis (formerly called Haemobartonella felis), parasitizing the blood on the surface of red blood cells. Cats can also be infected with an arc species — Mycoplasma haemominutum, but it happens much less often. Mycoplasmas are microorganisms occupying an intermediate position in the medical classification between bacteria, fungi and viruses. These are the smallest ones that exist from known microorganisms. Both varieties, and Mycoplasma haemofelis, and Mycoplasma haemominutum are termed "hemotropic mycoplasma" or simply "hemoplasm", since they are hemo-associated (tropic)
