DescriptionThere is the concept of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system.

renin and angiotensin — the hormones formed in the kidneys

aldosterone is the hormone of the adrenal glands. Adrenal glands are a pair of small endocrine glands located above the kidneys and consisting of two layers — outer-cortical and inner-cerebral.

The main function of these three hormones is to maintain a constant volume of circulating blood. But this system is given the leading role in the development of renal hypertension.

The formation of renin in the kidneys is stimulated by a decrease in blood pressure in the renal arteries and a decrease in the concentration of sodium in them. In the blood flowing into the kidneys there is a protein called angiotensinogen. The hormone renin acts on it, turning it into a biologically inactive angiotensin I, which, under the further action without the participation of renin, turns into active angiotensin II. This hormone has the ability to cause a spasm of blood vessels and thereby cause renal hypertension. Angiotensin II activates the secretion of aldosterone by the adrenal cortex (for angiotinsin and aldosterone, read the article on the site with the appropriate names).

The level of renin in the blood is increased with the following diseases and conditions:

reduction of extracellular fluid, restriction of drinking

hematopoietic deterioration

poor diet of sodium

the pathology of the right ventricle of the heart and the associated circulatory insufficiency

nephrotic syndrome — a group of kidney diseases, accompanied by a significant loss of protein in the urine and swelling

cirrhosis of the liver

Addison's disease — a decreased function of the adrenal cortex, accompanied by bronze staining of the skin

hypertension

narrowing of the renal artery

nephroblastoma — malignant tumor of nerve cells

kidney cancer that secretes renin

hemangioperiocyte (or pericyte) — malignant tumor of blood vessels

The level of renin in the blood is reduced with the following diseases and conditions:

excessive salt intake

limited potassium intake

increased allocation of vasopressin (the second name is antidiuretic hormone, prevents excess water loss by the body, there is an article on the site "Vasopressin"

acute renal failure

Kona syndrome is a rare disease caused by an adenoma (benign tumor) of the adrenal cortex that secretes the hormone aldosterone

Handing a blood test for renin, it does not hurt to know that the content of renin in the blood depends on the position in which the patient was at the time of blood sampling and the sodium content in the diet. The activity of renin is increased with a low-sodium diet, as well as in pregnant women. If the patient was before taking blood for analysis in the lying position, the level of the hormone would be lower than when standing or sitting
