| Description | Intermittent claudication — this is one of the names of the disease of the arteries of the lower extremities, the cause of which, in most cases, is atherosclerosis. The formation of plaques in atherosclerosis occurs both in the aorta and in the middle and small arteries. When the vessels are clogged, blood and oxygen are not supplied to the legs in sufficient quantities, especially under load. This lack of oxygen is called ischemia, which causes pain. In severe cases may develop ischemic ulcers, as well as gangrene, which can lead to leg amputation. Due to the slow course, at first the disease is asymptomatic for many years. But in the future, during physical exertion, when the muscles of the legs require more oxygen, and the arteries are narrowed and do not allow increasing the flow of blood to the muscles of the legs, pain arises — this is the main sign of intermittent claudication. If a person, after walking a short distance, is forced to stop because of severe pain in the muscles of the legs, this condition is called intermittent claudication |
